The Stella Maris Catholic Church has been transformed into an iconic landmark located on the beach front on Hedges Avenue, Broadbeach. Stokes Wheeler were engaged in the early design stage of the project to work collaboratively with the architectural team to develop a design that not only included the traditional characteristics of a Catholic Church but also allowed efficiency in both constructability and value management. Structurally, the church was built using the conventional methods of slab on ground, tilt panels and structural steel. This allowed for the focal point of the design to be the array of high-end finishes including sandstone, composite tiles, porcelain, marble, acoustic panels, and feature glazing. Collectively the variety of features and finishes portray a traditional building yet with a modern coastal twist. Though this project proved to be challenging a dedicated Stokes Wheeler team brought the preliminary design sketches to life delivering a unique and distinctive church to the Gold Coast community.
Stella Maris Catholic Church was the Regional winner of the Queensland Master Builders Housing & Construction Award 2015 for Community Facilities up to $5 million
