Mt Sion Library

The project consisted of a new library building and associated learning support, multipurpose, computer and staff areas.
Built on the bank of the Brisbane River, the site presented numerous topographical difficulties. Coupled with a restricted site and limited vehicular access, the challenges presented by the site location were numerous. These were largely overcome through regular and cooperative consultation between the school and construction staff to ensure both could continue to operate with limited impact.

The design intent was to create the illusion of bringing the outdoors inside and to maximise natural light and the building’s unique location on the Brisbane River. This was achieved utilising an exposed steel structure supporting a ‘butterfly’ roof and surrounding the library on two sides with 6 metre high curved glass walls. Internally, the extensive use of timber and ply, bamboo light fittings, and a feature aquarium, all assisted in creating a ‘natural’ feel.

Project Value: $2.4 million
